about

On his debut Anumi Pause EP, enigmatic French keyboard prodigy Basile (formerly known as Prince Jean) offers a raw, mercurial take on jazz, synthesizers, and club music in the Information Age.

Transversing the intersections of spacey ambient collage and boom-and-blip contemporary avant sound system culture, Basile creates sonic narratives of fracture and unity that climax in aural totalities somehow both worldly and otherworldly.

Anumi Pause is a sober psychedelic adventure through the full spectrum of recorded sound. The gaseous flowering arpeggiations of ‘Stonic Visions’ provide cloud cover for cut up streams of glassy HD ultrasound until reckoning sub blasts and a crystal snare-bell crack solicit mandatory head nods on the ground level. ‘Dehors’ follows like a smashed-and-glued DVD nature documentary about a fantastic, vibrant world whose colorful flora and fauna exist by laws of nature entirely other than our own.

‘Moment 500’ and ‘Lost Minds’ announce themselves as dance tracks at their core, but their unpredictable structures and baroque, evolving sound palettes betray a rare musical category, carrying forward the journey-like momentum of the album as a whole.

Winding in and out of Basile’s imaginary landscapes, running through mazes of densely foliated white noise jungles and humid canyons of organ chords, one cannot but see colors. The closing warped piano serenade of ‘Souvenirs’ seals Anumi Pause like a treasured memory, a compelling tale, a lucid dream.

Artist statement:

"At some point when I was working on this album, I created a short story to make the whole thing coherent and guide me. It was about someone/something out of our planet that would land here and discover our world, but his senses would only allow him to feel the good things happening right now on earth. The music is his only way to express what he perceived and that’s what I tried to represent with Anumi Pause. Be safe, respectful and spread love around you, try to do nice things from your life, and not only for yourself."
